Capilla de san ildefonso alcalá de henares

wikipedia

The Chapel of San Ildefonso was the church of the Colegio Mayor San Ildefonso of the University of Alcalá and was completed in 1516. In it are buried Francisco Vallés and Antonio de Nebrija, and presents the sepulchral monument of Cardinal Cisneros.

Simultaneously to the construction of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, under the direction of the master builder Pedro de Gumiel, its university chapel was erected in an adjacent lot, under the dedication of the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Toledo, San Ildefonso.

Of Renaissance style, it has a rectangular floor plan, with a single nave divided into two rooms separated by a toral arch. Its roof is a coffered ceiling of geometric Mudejar order. The presbytery is of greater height, and is also covered by alfarje. The building was completed in 1510.

It is in the Cisnerian style, which combines Plateresque with Mudejar. Three elements stand out especially in its interior: the Plateresque plasterwork measuring 800 square meters, the cenotaph of Cardinal Cisneros, and in its ceiling the polychrome wooden coffered ceiling whose Mudejar pair and knuckle framework does not consist of the usual pairs of visible suspenders with their corresponding corbels, which gives greater light and amplitude to the rooms and roof.
