Jay Wolpert wrote the first script based on the theme park attraction in 2001 and Stuart Beattie rewrote it in 2002. Around that time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer became involved in the project; Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio finished the script, introducing the supernatural curse plot. Filming spanned from October 2002 to March 2003 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and on sets built in Los Angeles, California.

The world premiere was held at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, on June 28, 2003. The Curse of the Black Pearl was an unexpected success, earning rave reviews and grossing over $653 million worldwide. The film became the first in a successful series of films, with two sequels shot at the same time, Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, released in 2006 and 2007, a fourth sequel, On Stranger Tides, in 2011 and a fifth, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, in 2017. The original film was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Actor for Depp.
