Masters of the Universe is a 1987 American action fantasy film based on the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, Billy Barty and Courteney Cox.

The film was released in the United States on August 7, 1987 after the popularity of the toy and cartoon line was peaked and was a total disaster after Superman IV.

On the planet Eternia, at the center of the universe, Skeletor’s forces have taken control of Castle Grayskull and captured the sorceress. Skeletor plans to use the Castle’s hidden power by using «The Great Eye of the Galaxy,» a portal in the Castle’s throne, which opens only if Eternia’s moon is aligned with the planet.

After countless attempts, the hordes of Skeletor (Frank Langella) have finally managed to take Grayskull Castle by force and imprison the sorceress who guards it in order to seize the power within the fortress. The villain announces the end of the war and calls for the triumph of the forces of darkness, although there is still a chastened pocket of resistance led by He-man (Dolph Lundgren), a warrior who refuses to leave the future of Eternia in the hands of the evil Skeletor. During a confrontation between the two sides, the battle between the forces of good and evil moves to planet Earth.

In 1987, He-Man made his film debut in Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgreen, Frank Langella and Courney Cox (yes, long before he rose to fame in Friends).

In this film, Skeletor takes over Eternia, and only He-Man can stop him, but to do so he has to travel to Earth, where he teams up with Julie Winston (Courtney Cox), a girl who has been orphaned.

The film did not do very well at the box office, and critics treated it harshly, but there is a fact that connects this film with Chris Pine, the actor who plays Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman.
